In the late 1990s, eight-year-old Sasha and her Hungarian immigrant family relocate to a new home on Vancouver Island. Their fresh start is interrupted by increasingly dangerous behaviour from Jeremy, the family's oldest child.

Sophy Romvari's deeply intimate portrait of a family coping with a challenging situation evokes the specific curiosity and disorientation of being a kid with sophistication, soul, and playfulness. It's transportative. Eylul Guven, the young actress at the center of this story, gives a performance so honest and relatable it could be mistaken for documentary—which is key to the film's unexpected elliptical structure. Just when the film proves itself to be an impressive but straightforward coming-of-age tale, it suddenly transforms, exploding and expanding the personal into something unexpected, ambitious, and intellectual. -SW
