Intersecting stories unfold in the cyberpunk city of San Zokyo, where a young hacker takes on the corporation behind Meme, a drug that mines users' psyches to deliver personalized psychedelic trips and hyper-targeted ads.
With the beating-heart-DIY spirit of George Kuchar and densely layered multimedia frenzy of Ryan Trecartin, L.A.-based filmmaker Tucker Bennett creates a gonzo, yet entirely plausible, sci-fi vision of our near future. In his fifth feature, Bennett melds a sincere love of ‘90s direct-to-video aesthetics and bygone blogosphere eras with a creative use of generative AI to create a kaleidoscopic, chronically-online cyberpunk-noir, weaving together a large cast of archetypal characters: an emo teenager and her out-of-touch detective father; a ubiquitous hyperpop-star; corporate shills vying for the personal data of citizen-consumers; d-list streamers, strippers and boxers; brazen influencers hustling their personal brand; checked-out ravers; vampiric executives and tech tycoons. With endless creativity and aesthetic integrity, Bennett lampoons and celebrates the myriad sub-cultures that populate today’s internet, betting that, in our post-ironic content-slop world, he can still stun his audience. -PK
