Among the most exciting American filmmakers to emerge in the last decade, Raven Jackson and Kahlil Joseph are multi-disciplinary artists whose intuitive approach to their craft has brought a fresh depth to the language of contemporary cinema. The two of them will join us for an in-depth conversation about intuition in the filmmaking process, and the fluid nature of a work finding its shape throughout the various stages of production.

Raven Jackson
is an award-winning filmmaker, poet, and photographer from Tennessee. Her work often explores landscapes of indefinable experiences and emotions, as well as the body’s relationship to nature. Recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Director, Raven’s debut narrative film, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, made in partnership with Maria Altamirano, PASTEL, and A24, world-premiered in the US Dramatic Competition at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and was named one of the top ten movies of the year by The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and RogerEbert.com. The film has screened at the New York Film Festival, San Sebastián International Film Festival, BFI London, AFI Fest, and more.

Kahlil Joseph creates films and video installations that disrupt linear narratives with a unique treatment of both sound and music used as materials to generate lyricism and complexity. In addition to his artistic practice, Joseph currently serves on the board of The Underground Museum alongside his family, carrying on the vision of his brother, the late Noah Davis. Joseph’s current focus is the ongoing enterprise BLKNWS®, an artwork and a conceptual business project. Originally conceived as a television program, BLKNWS® operates under the unique practice of “conceptual journalism” to present an uninterrupted, highly curated broadcast that highlights the vastness of the Black experience with sources from social media, popular culture, and actual news footage. Joseph is currently in post-production on a feature-length version of BLKNWS.
